Alison Pofsky of New City, N.Y., a junior at Muhlenberg College, has received the 2003 Tzedek Exemplar of Excellence Student Award from Hillel International, the Foundation for Jewish Campus Life. The annual award honors one student nationwide who has enhanced the quality of life on campus and in the general community through his or her own social justice work. The award was presented this week at the 2003 Charlotte and Jack J. Spitzer Forum on Public Policy in Baltimore, Md.

Pofsky, a political science major with a minor in Spanish, is a Dean’s List student at Muhlenberg, where she is president of Students Have a Real Effect (SHARE) and coordinates monthly food drives. She tutors regularly at Casa Guadalupe, an Allentown community center, and volunteers weekly at Daybreak, a drop-in rehabilitation facility. She also volunteers weekly at the Sixth Street Shelter in Allentown. In the fall, she applied for grant funds from AOL and Hillel, allowing the College to purchase a computer for students at the shelter.

“Ali is a truly remarkable young woman and an example of what all students can do to make community service and social action a part their lives,” says Patricia Mittleman, Muhlenberg’s Hillel Director. “This is an incredible honor for Muhlenberg College. Ali was selected from among the thousands of students from Hillels around the world who are engaged in tzedek (community service) work through their Hillels. Her selection highlights the great partnership that religious life and the Office of Community Service have at Muhlenberg.”
