Muhlenberg College has been named one of the top 20 mid-Atlantic “undiscovered gems” by Washington Post education writer Jay Mathews.

Finding that “being a college with a big name is not the same thing as being a college with the right stuff,” Mathews informally surveyed high school guidance counselors in search of colleges that deserve consideration by high school seniors. Muhlenberg ranks on the resulting list of the top 20 mid-Atlantic colleges that are likely to fulfill student expectations and is #37 on Mathews’ list of the top 100 hidden gems nationwide, which the Post printed on April 1. The regional list appeared in the Sunday, April 6 issue.

Calling Muhlenberg’s campus “beautiful” and the faculty “lively,” Mathews points to the College’s high selectivity and optional SAT admissions policy as attributes that are likely to please prospective students, noting that a former guidance counselor calls Muhlenberg “a fine liberal arts college with a strong sense of community.”
