Ethno botanist Dr. Mark Plotkin, well-known author of “Tales of a Shaman’s Apprentice” and, more recently, “The Killers Within,” a work that focuses on the drug-resistant bacteria and new medicines for nature, will speak at Muhlenberg College on Tuesday October 26 at 7 p.m. in the Miller Forum, Moyer Hall.

Plotkin, who Time magazine calls an environmental “Hero for the Planet,” will give a public lecture on the need for rainforest conservation. In his presentation, Plotkin will draw from his vast experience of over 20 years in the rainforest working with the shamans of Central and South America. Plotkin will share his unmatched knowledge of healing plants, traditions of the shamans and the overall importance of the rain forest as resources for potential cures for many of the world’s diseases today.

Plotkin is also the author of numerous scientific papers and reports and has been featured in several documentaries and television segments including the film Amazon, which was nominated for an academy award for Best Documentary.

Plotkin’s appearance is sponsored by the Muhlenberg College Center for Ethics as part of Disease: Representation, Research and Rights, a semester-long series of events. Through interactive programming, presentations, and classroom activities, the Center encourages investigation of social practices in the local college community, as American citizens, and across diverse cultures.
