Muhlenberg College sophomore Matthew Zimmerman is one of 10 students selected to participate in Middlebury College's summer certificate program in Digital Media Production and New Media Studies. Zimmerman will receive a $1900 stipend in addition to expenses paid for the four-week program at Middlebury's Center for Educational Technology (CET) in Middlebury, Vt.

An art major, Zimmerman is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Kent D. Zimmerman of Cockeysville, Md.

As one of three regional technology centers supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the CET serves teachers and learners who are interested in using technology to create effective learning environments. The CET, in its role as a regional center for 37 mid-Atlantic and New England colleges, is committed to helping students develop advanced skills in digital media production and supporting their efforts to investigate media from interdisciplinary, critical perspectives.

Acceptance into the advanced student technology program is very competitive, and applicants from all 37 colleges are eligible. Media foci of the program include digital video and photography, interactive fiction, Flash animations, hypertext, weblogs, digital storytelling, and collaborative multimedia authoring. Students will be able to develop skills in a variety of software programs including Photoshop, Flash MX, LiveStage, Final Cut Pro and Dreamweaver MX. As part of the critical thread of the program, students will examine topics such as Internet history, virtual communities, interactive narrative, real-time authoring and intellectual property ethics.
