Muhlenberg College will host the first annual LVAIC (Lehigh Valley Association of Independent Colleges) Undergraduate Conference on Social Research/Social Justice, March 25-26, 2004. Notable speakers include Janet Wasko, professor of communication at the University of Oregon, and the Rev. Calvin O. Butts, president of SUNY College-New Westbury. Wasko will give the plenary lecture, "Challenging Hollywood's Myths," Thursday evening, March 25, at 7 p.m. in Miller Forum, Moyer Hall. She is the author of several books on U.S. media and film industries, most recently "How Hollywood Works" (2001) and "Hollywood in the Information Age" (1994).

Butts will give the keynote address on Friday, March 26, at 12 noon in Miller Forum, Moyer Hall. Butts, who received an honorary doctorate from Muhlenberg in 1999, is president of SUNY College-Old Westbury and pastor of the nationally renowned Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York City. Since being named Old Westbury's president in September 1999, he has reinvigorated one of the most diverse public college campuses in America. He is determined to prepare Old Westbury students to succeed in the global marketplace while fostering in each leadership qualities that will prove valuable to both themselves and the communities in which they live. Butts is the chairman of the National Affiliate Development Initiative of the National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS (BLCA) and a founding member of the organization's Board of Commissioners, and has served as president of Africare, an independent organization dedicated to the improvement of the quality of life in rural Africa.

On Friday morning, LVAIC students will present research papers on topics including Community, Youth & Social Justice; Economic Dimensions of Social Justice: Local & Global Contexts; Text & Contexts of Education; and Power, Propaganda & Mass Media. A roundtable lunch on topics related to "Living Ethically vs. Acting for Social Justice" will follow the keynote address.
