Joseph Kalichstein, celebrated pianist, will perform at Muhlenberg College’s Paul C. Empie Theatre, Friday, September 10 at 8 p.m. His performance is the first in this year’s piano series.

One of the world’s foremost pianists, Kalichstein enthralls audiences throughout the United States and Europe, winning praise as orchestral soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. He is also the first Chamber Music Advisor to the Kennedy Center, where he has given solo recitals, performed with the National Symphony Orchestra and played a major role in chamber music festivals devoted to Brahms and Beethoven. He has performed with nearly all of the major orchestras in the United States and Europe and in solo and chamber music concerts throughout the world.

Born in Tel Aviv, Kalichstein came to the United States in 1962, studying at the Juilliard School, where he won the Young Concert Artists Auditions and, later, the Leventritt Award, resulting in the invitation from Leonard Bernstein to perform Beethoven’s Concert No. 4 with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in a CBS televised performance. A favorite of New York concertgoers, Kalichstien has appeared in several recitals on the Carnegie Hall “Keyboard Virtuosi” series. He has also appeared there with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Leipzig Chamber Orchestra and with the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson trio.

Kalichstein’s performance will be the first of four recitals in Muhlenberg’s 2004-2005 Piano Series. His concert will feature the works of Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann, Frederic Chopin and Franz Liszt. Idil Beret will perform next in the concert series on November 12 at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $22 general admission, $16 for faculty, staff and senior citizens. For more information, or to reserve tickets, contact the Department of Music at Muhlenberg College, 484-664-3363.
