Master magicians Topas and Eugene Burger kick off the inaugural week of Muhlenberg College’s The Theory and Art of Magic program. On Wednesday, September 8, 2004 at 8 p.m., Topas in Concert, with Eugene Burger, will feature a full-evening magic performance in the Baker Theatre.

Eugene Burger, named “one of the 100 most influential magicians of the 20th century” by MAGIC Magazine, has written fifteen best-selling magic books, has starred in eight instructional videos and DVDs and lectured to magicians’ groups around the world. Named “Close-Up Magician of the Year” in both 1998 and 1999, Burger has been profiled twice on CNN, was featured in an eleven-page cover story in the Chicago Reader, and has appeared on countless television shows.

Topas is one of Europe's brightest magical stars. He exploded onto the scene in 1991 when he won first prize in manipulation at the World Championship of Magic.

As the word "manipulation" conveys, Topas achieved his fame by perfecting a type of magic with the hands: wands, bells, cards, and others objects appear and multiply at his fingertips in a bewildering display. His manipulative magic was one of the highlights of NBC's first edition of The World's Greatest Magic in 1994. Topas has performed and lectured on magic in many countries around the world, including a tour of India. His work has been featured on TV in the United States, Germany, Portugal and France.

Burger and Topas will each make individual presentations on the art of magic. Invitation to Mystery with Burger will be held on Monday, October 6, 2004 at 4:30 p.m. in Seegers Union 108-110. An Evening with Topas will take place on Thursday, September 9, 2004 at 7:30 p.m.

Created by Dr. Lawrence Hass, philosopher, magician and associate professor of philosophy for at Muhlenberg, The Theory and Art of Magic program is the first on-going symposium of the magical arts. At the heart of the program is a series of visits to the College by world-class magicians and theorists who perform astonishing magic, teach classes, and give philosophical talks on the nature of magic as an important human experience and as a performing art. In conjunction with these "magicians-in-residence," the College offers courses that dovetail with the program, including a studio arts class on performance magic.

Tickets for Topas in Concert, with Eugene Burger are $20. Tickets for An Evening with Topas are $5. Invitation to Mystery with Eugene Burger is free and no tickets are required. For more information or tickets, visit www.muhlenberg.edu/cultural/magic or call the Box Office at 484-664-3333.
