Muhlenberg College President Peyton R. Helm will lead a marathon reading of Homer’s The Iliad on Tuesday, November 23 from 8:30 a.m. to approximately 9 p.m. in Seegers Union, Room 108. Light refreshments will be served throughout the day. This event is free and open to the public.

As part of the History and the Homeric Epic class, which is taught by Helm, the class is required to read the entire poem in one sitting. Last year, Helm and his class read Homer’s The Odyssey from start to finish in one day with the help of several dozen students, faculty, staff and administrators.

Helm believes that reading aloud these works by Homer adds to the experience and understanding, since The Iliad and The Odyssey were originally oral poems performed aloud in front of an audience.

The reading on November 23 is broken up into half-hour blocks, with four readers per block.
