Muhlenberg College Raises Breast Cancer Awareness

 Thursday, September 30, 2004 00:19 PM

On Friday, October 8, 2004, Muhlenberg College will participate in Lee National Denim Day, the world’s largest single-day fundraiser for breast cancer.

Students participating in the College’s Health Communication class will collect donations for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and hand out pink ribbons, the symbol for breast cancer awareness, in Seegers Union from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. These students will also be handing out breast cancer fact sheets that will contain information they have learned in their class.

Students enrolled in Health Communication have been examining how breast cancer and other diseases are portrayed in the media.

The College is also sponsoring two information sessions in Seegers Union classrooms 108-109 at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Healthcare professionals Jyoti Gopal, M.D., and Kathy Attieh, P.A.-C, from Muhlenberg Primary Care in Bethlehem, will discuss self breast-exams and answer questions about breast health in these two different sessions. These information sessions are free and open to the public.

In addition, to further show their support for breast cancer awareness, all students, faculty and staff will be encouraged to wear denim.

Lee National Denim Day on the Muhlenberg campus is sponsored by the Center for Ethics, the communication department, and Wood Dining Services. If you have any questions or would like to be involved in this day of awareness please contact Dr. Susan Kahlenberg at [email protected] or 484-664-3483.
