Muhlenberg College has been named one of the top 25 "best values for private colleges and universities" by Consumers Digest. The list is in the June 2004 issue of Consumers Digest, which has a circulation of 1.25 million.

While noting that the cost of attending college should not be the only factor a prospective student considers, Consumers Digest says "we do feel it is an important consideration for many families struggling to keep pace with the escalating price of higher education." The "best values" are determined based on a formula balancing academic excellence (standardized test scores, high-school rank and grade point average of entering freshmen) with the educational quality offered by each institution (student-to-faculty ratio, graduation rate, percentage of faculty holding a Ph.D. or terminal degree). With the resulting "value-index score" for each institution and its estimated cost of attending for the 2003-04 year, rankings are created.

With a value index of 96.5, Muhlenberg is ranked 20th of the 132 private colleges and universities considered. Other "top values" include Brigham Young University, Washington and Lee University, Dartmouth College and California Institute of Technology.

Founded in 1848, Muhlenberg College is a highly selective liberal arts college in Allentown, Pa. The College has a student body of 2,100 full-time undergraduates.
