Muhlenberg College Announces 2005 Alumni Achievement Awards

Muhlenberg College’s Alumni Association Achievement Awards Committee announces this year’s winners, all of whom will be celebrated at the 2005 Alumni Achievement Awards Luncheon on June 4, 2005.

Muhlenberg College’s Alumni Association Achievement Awards Committee announces this year’s winners, all of whom will be celebrated at the 2005 Alumni Achievement Awards Luncheon on June 4, 2005.

Debra Scurnick Block ’86, of Boca Raton, FL, was selected to receive the College’s Tricorn Award for her work as the Chairperson of the 20 Year Celebration of Sororities that was held on the College’s campus in April 2004.

For 12 months, Block worked tirelessly to identify volunteers, design programming and recruit attendees for the weekend. Her efforts resulted in 175 alumnae returning to campus for the weekend.

Block, a psychology major and a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority while attending Muhlenberg, is currently an appellate attorney.

Sandra Smith Bodnyk ’73, of Orefield, Pa., was selected to receive the College’s Alumni Service to the College Award.

Bodnyk, an economics major while at Muhlenberg, received a graduate degree in banking from Stonier Graduate School of Banking- Rutgers University. Currently, Bodnyk serves as the Executive Vice President of Keystone Nazareth Bank and Trust.

Bodnyk has maintained a position on the College’s Board of Associates for more than a decade and has served as president since 2000. She is a Life Member of the Alumni Trust Fund, a Career Network Volunteer and is a member of the President's Strategic Plan Correspondence Group.

In addition to her service to Muhlenberg, Bodnyk gives tirelessly as a volunteer to the community. She is a Board Member and Treasurer of the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, a Board Member to the Good Shepherd Home and serves on the President’s Council at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia.

Mike Doyle ’94, of New York, N.Y., was selected to receive the College’s Young Alumni Recognition Award.

Doyle, who graduated with a double major in psychology and English, currently serves as Vice President of Corporate Communications for NBC Universal, where he manages communications for the NBCU division focused on digital media, business development and international channels.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Doyle has remained active with the College. He has served as the Reunion Chair for his class, is a member of the Muhlenberg Career Network, and has participated in regional alumni activities.

Thomas Kelsall ’55, of Mitchellville, Md., was selected to receive the College’s Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award.

Kelsall is a retired astrophysicist for NASA/Goddard Space flight Center and is recognized as one of the few cosmologists in the world. He was part of the group that eventually proved the Big Bang theory. Kelsall worked on John Glenn’s first ride to space, was a project director on the Hubble telescope, and had received numerous awards from NASA for his achievements. In addition to his vast professional accomplishments, Kelsall has served the College by participating in Alumni in the Classroom Week, where he has shared his professional experiences with current Muhlenberg students.

Kelsall, a physics major while at Muhlenberg, received his M.S. from George Washington University and his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland.

Connie Kunda, of Allentown, Pa., was selected to receive Muhlenberg College’s Service to the College by a Friend Award.

Kunda is the retired Associate Athletic Director and Wellness Director at Muhlenberg College. She was a professor in the physical education department from 1966 until her retirement in 2001. Kunda founded the Wellness Institute at Muhlenberg in 1982, and developed a comprehensive student wellness program.

Kunda’s commitment to teaching healthy lifestyles led to the development of a curriculum and programs that serve in conjunction with the overall mission of the College. She also serves as a guest lecturer in Wellness Core Courses.

John Rosenberg ’63, of Philadelphia, Pa., was selected to receive the College’s Alumni Leadership Award.

Rosenberg served the Alumni Association as President from 1999-2003. Under his leadership and direction, the Association renewed its mission to “cultivate among its members a sense of pride and lifetime commitment to the Muhlenberg community.” Rosenberg is a Life Member of the Alumni Trust Fund and was instrumental in securing funding from the Alumni Trust Fund to support Alumni Association initiatives. In addition, Rosenberg was a member of the Presidential Search Committee that named President Randy Helm as Muhlenberg’s 11 th president.

Currently, he serves as a member of the Board of Trustees.

Rosenberg, who graduated from Muhlenberg with a degree in psychology, received his M.A. in psychology and his Ed. D in developmental psychology from Temple University. He is employed as Vice President of Investments for SmithBarney.
