The Creative Genius of Mark Klee: The Allentown Zoo & Other Myths August 30 – October 7, 2006

The Martin Art Gallery at Muhlenberg College proudly hosts The Creative Genius of Mark Klee: The Allentown Zoo & Other Myths, August 30 – October 7, 2006.

 Thursday, August 10, 2006 01:59 PM

Curated by Muhlenberg College art professor Raymond Barnes, the exhibition is both a visual and auditory overview of the inventive, intelligent, and idiosyncratic creative processes and products of Mark Klee. Mark Klee, a.k.a. Mr. Mark, was a beloved and integral part of WMUH FM91.7 and the edgier side of the Valley arts scene for nearly two decades. During that time, his multi-faceted talent spawned a body of work– spoken work, illustration and design, theatre, and music performance— that was energetic, satirical, entertaining, and thought provoking.

The exhibition is designed to encourage visitors to peruse hundreds of pages of Klee’s radio scripts. Many are hand-written on ordinary sheets of paper; words fill the pages top to bottom and left to right in a teeming stream-of-consciousness. Seating and headphones are provided for those who wish to settle in and listen to his unique broadcasts. More than two dozen of his illustrations, graphic designs, and paintings are included as are numerous pieces of ephemera linked to his wide-spread creative activities.

A reception will be held Wednesday, September 6, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. with a live performance of spoken word and music by the Seismatics from 5 – 6:00 in the evening. The event is open to the public and free of charge.

The Gallery is located in the Baker Center for the Arts. Hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon – 9:00 p.m., closed during semester breaks. For information, contact Kathryn Burke in the Martin Art Gallery office, 484.664.3467.
