Expert Panel to Discuss Importance of Politics, Ethics and Citizenship in 2008

Muhlenberg College will host Dr. Sidney Milkis, Dr. Shelley Wilcox and Dr. Lisa Bowleg for a panel discussion entitled “Politics, Ethics & Citizenship in 2008: What Matters & Why? A Panel of Experts Responds,” on October 20 at 7 p.m. in Miller Forum, Moyer Hall.

Milkis, a political scientist and Muhlenberg alumnus, is a professor in the politics department at the University of Virginia.  His research focuses on the American presidency, political parties and elections and American political history.  He is the author of many books including The President and the Parties: The Transformation of the American Party System Since the New Deal (1993) and is the co-author of Presidential Greatness (2000) and American Government: Balancing Rights and Democracy (2007). 

Wilcox is Associate Professor of Philosophy at San Francisco State University.  She works in the areas of social and political philosophy, feminist philosophy and applied ethics, with an interest in citizenship theory and its applications to immigration and urban environmental issues.  Dr. Wilcox has published articles on immigration, feminist ethics and globalization in journals, including Social Theory and Practice and Journal of Social Philosophy and numerous anthologies.

Bowleg, a psychologist and public policy specialist, is Associate Professor in the Department of Community Health and Prevention at Drexel University.  Her research and publications focus on multiple minority stress, resilience and coming out issues among African-American, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people and the influence of social structural and gender role factors on sexual risk in African-American communities.

From the three expert perspectives of a political scientist, a philosopher, and a psychologist and public policy specialist, the panel will discuss the semester’s theme from their different disciplinary perspectives.

This event is part of the Center for Ethics series, 2008:  Politics, Ethics and Citizenship, and is co-sponsored by the Lectures and Forums Committee and the Department of Political Science.

2008: Politics, Ethics and Citizenship is presented in cooperation with the Political Science Department’s Election Series and co-sponsored by the Lectures and Forums Committee, with assistance from the Departments of Art, Media & Communication and Theatre & Dance, and the Muhlenberg Activities Council and the Multicultural Center.
