Former New Jersey Governor To Lead Discussion At ‘Berg

On Wednesday, February 20, Muhlenberg College will host former Governor of New Jersey and U.S. Representative James Florio.

 Monday, February 18, 2008 01:59 PM

He will appear from 3-4pm in Miller Forum, Moyer Hall, where he will lead a discussion on “Government Leadership in the 21st Century.”

Florio was elected as the 49th Governor of New Jersey, serving from 1990 to 1994. Prior to being elected governor, Florio held a number of elected positions and spent years serving the public as an attorney as well as politician. He also served in the Navy, where he retired as a lieutenant commander. After his naval service, Florio was admitted to the New Jersey bar in 1967 and began working as an attorney of law in Camden, New Jersey. Shortly after, Florio began a political career where he was elected as an assemblyman in New Jersey Legislature from 1970 to 1974.

Florio went on to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served a term from 1974 to 1990 in which he was reelected seven times. While in Congress he served as chair of Subcommittee on Commerce, Consumer Protection and Competitiveness of Energy. He was also the chair for the Subcommittee on Housing and Consumer Interests of the Select Committee on Aging.

Florio graduated from Trenton State College magna cum laude in 1962 with a degree in social studies. He went on to study public law and government at Columbia University with the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship Award before earning his law degree at Rutgers University.

Still a resident of New Jersey, Florio will bring a wealth of public service and political experience to Muhlenberg College for this discussion.
