International Painter To Speak At ‘Berg

On Monday, April 28, internationally renowned painter Shahzia Sikander will give a lecture at 4pm in Empie Theater, Center for the Arts. A reception will follow.

 Tuesday, April 22, 2008 01:59 PM

The event is part of the series Facing East, Facing West: Across Boundaries.

In her lecture, Sikander will talk about being an international artist from Pakistan and the timeliness of her work.

Trained in Mughal painting, her art focuses on Indian and Persian miniature painting, a traditional style that is both highly stylized and disciplined. Through this technique-driven style of art, Sikander blends the Eastern focus on precision with the Western emphasis on creativity and subjective expression. In this way, she investigates the nature of boundaries and their geographical, cultural and psychological influence. She also uses her art to explore and dispel stereotypes about the East and Eastern Pakistani women.

Sikander is native of Lahore, Pakistan and in 1992 received a BFA from the National College of Arts in Lahore before coming to the United States and receiving her MFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 1995. When not touring internationally, she resides in New York City where she creates her work.

Her work has been featured in numerous exhibits worldwide. Her latest exhibit appeared in Sydney, Australia. She is an award winning painter who most recently received the Young Global Leader Fellowship award from the MacArthur Foundation. She was also the recipient of an honorary artist award from the Pakistan Ministry of Culture and National Council of Arts.

This lecture was made possible through the Gruber Lectureship in the Arts.

This event is free and open to the public.
