Muhlenberg College Hosts Union Baptist Day

Muhlenberg College welcomes members of Union Baptist Church to worship on campus on Sunday, August 31, at 11 a.m. in the Egner Memorial Chapel.

 Monday, August 18, 2008 01:59 PM

Muhlenberg College Chaplain, Rev. Peter Bredlau will preside at the service, and Rev. Benjamin T. Hailey, Sr. of Union Baptist Church will preach.

A luncheon for the visitors from United Baptist Church will follow the service.  There will also be games for children and campus tours.

This will be the second collaboration between the College and the Church.  In the spring 2008 semester, members of the Muhlenberg community attended a service at UBC.   Rev. Phil Ellmore, interim vice president for development at Muhlenberg, served as a guest preacher, and the College’s gospel choir performed.  Muhlenberg President Randy Helm greeted the congregation, and Dean of Students Karen Green was also in attendance.

UBC was the first African-American Baptist church to be formed in Allentown.  Pastor Hailey has been with the church since 2003, and in that time membership has increased from 150 to over 700.  The church has added over 21 new ministries designed to meet the needs of a growing congregation and is in the final stage of developing its non-profit community development center.

Union Baptist Day is sponsored by the office of the president with support from the office of the chaplain and the multicultural center.
