Muhlenberg Hosts Social Justice Conference

The Fifth Annual Social Research/Social Justice Conference (SRSJ) will be held at Muhlenberg College on April 3-4, 2008. This conference is sponsored by LVAIC, the department of media and communication at Muhlenberg College, and RJ Fellows Honors Program.

 Monday, March 17, 2008 01:59 PM

The SRSJ Conference provides students within the Lehigh Valley a forum for sharing innovative, excellent research addressing some of the most challenging issues of social justice in both contemporary and historical contexts. The conference encourages collaborative exploration among students, faculty and community members of the role of academic research in the creation of more just and humane societies.

The plenary event is on April 3, 2008, Moyer Hall, Miller Forum, 7 p.m., and will feature keynote speaker Elizabeth Barret, who is renown for her documentary "Stranger with a Camera."  This documentary probes the tragic encounter between a mountain man and a filmmaker to explore today's unresolved questions concerning media images and the individual's lack of power to define oneself within the American landscape.  There will be a discussion after her documentary viewing, followed by a reception.

The conference itself is on Friday, April 4, 2008, Moyer Hall, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., featuring unique and innovative student research projects in a myriad of forms, including documentaries, textual analyses, review of literatures, survey analysis, ethnographies, and unique research projects.  There will also be a digital media exhibit produced by the RJ Fellows Honors students, Class of 2008.  The conference is a public event, and there is no registration fee to attend the conference.
