McEwan photographs objects that are ubiquitous in daily life but to which mostpeople give little thought or even acknowledgement.  He shoots these taken-for-granted objects from unexpected angles and points of view, and crops the final composition to leave the viewer with just a hint of the object’s true identity.

McEwan chooses to work with a palette that includes opposite ends of the spectrum—literally and figuratively.  Some works are studies in cool, misty blues and grays while others are vibrant, saturated vermilions, oranges and yellows.  His disparate choices highlight the power and emotion that color can convey. He also achieves a yin-yang quality in portraying form and light, working adeptly whether using sharply-lighted, linear contrasts or those that are muted, amorphous and subdued.

Paul McEwan is Assistant Professor of Media and Communication and Film Studies at Muhlenberg College.  A reception will be held for McEwan on Thursday, August 28, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. in the Galleria Lobby.  The artist will be on hand to answer questions and offer informal discussion. The exhibition and all events are open to the public and free of charge.  Galleria hours are daily, 10 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.
