Presidential Hopeful Mike Gravel To Appear At 'Berg

Libertarian party Presidential candidate Mike Gravel will appear at Muhlenberg College on Thursday, April 10, at 7 p.m. in Miller Forum, Moyer Hall.

 Wednesday, April 2, 2008 01:59 PM

The former Senator will speak about his campaign platform, including same sex marriage rights, and his stance against the military industrial complex and for the National Initiative for Democracy.  Hosted by the Gay Straight Alliance, this event is free and open to the public.  Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Sen. Gravel served in the Alaska House of Representatives from 1963-66, and as Speaker from 1965-66. He then represented Alaska in the U.S. Senate from 1969-81. He chaired the Energy, Water Resources, Buildings and Grounds, and Environmental Pollution subcommittees.
In 1971, he waged a successful one-man filibuster for five months, forcing the Nixon administration to cut a deal, and effectively ending the draft. He is most prominently known for his release of the Pentagon Papers, the secret official study that revealed the lies and manipulations of successive U.S. administrations that misled the country into the Vietnam War.

In March of 2008, Sen. Gravel announced that he would leave the Democratic Party and would compete for the Libertarian Party’s nomination for President.

Books authored by Sen. Gravel are Jobs and More Jobs, and Citizen Power. He lectures and writes about governance, foreign affairs, economics, Social Security, tax reform, energy, environmental issues and democracy.
