An opening reception for this group exhibition will be held in the Martin Art Gallery,Wednesday, October 15, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.

Guest curator Lou Joseph collaborated with nine artists who worked in the U.S.and abroad exploring various apparatus and infrastructures that promote publicand personal safety.  They also investigated systems designed to protect us froma myriad of both real and imagined dangers—natural, criminal, accidental, civil, chemical, governmental, sociological, mental, or biological.  While some worksrelate directly to the form and function of real objects found in our daily “safetyarchitecture” others are examinations of the edges where obsession with safetycan turn into paranoia.

The artists: Diana Behl, Micah Bornstein, Sam Brown, Amze Emmons, KimFaler, Goatmother Industrial, Brooke Inman, Michael Markwick and Mario Marzan used a variety of media, including site-specific and video installations, inkdrawing, intaglio printmaking, and gouache painting to create a richly diverseresponse to the safety theme. The exhibition and all gallery events are open to the public and free of charge. Gallery hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon – 9:00 p.m.; closed duringmajor holidays and semester breaks.  For information, contact Kathryn Burke inthe Martin Art Gallery office, 484.664.3467.
