Sociologist Dr. William Gamson to Visit Muhlenberg College

Dr. William A. Gamson, Professor of Sociology at Boston College, will deliver a public lecture, “Elections as a Media Framing Contest,” on September 22 at 7 p.m. in Miller Forum

It is a part of the College’s semester-long Center for Ethics series, 2008: Politics Ethics and Citizenship.  Gamson’s visit is co-sponsored by the Lectures and Forums Forum program and the Department of Media and Communication.

In addition to his work as a professor, Gamson is also the co-director of the Media Research and Action Project (MRAP) at Boston College.  He is the author of numerous books and articles on political discourse, the mass-media and social movements from as early as the 1960s.  Gamson’s works include WHAT’S NEWS (1984), Talking Politics (1992) and The Strategy of Social Protest (2nd edition, 1990), among others.

Gamson is a past president of the American Sociological Association and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.  His current work involves the development of a game simulation on Global Justice issues and is available at www.globaljusticegame.mrap.info.

2008: Politics, Ethics and Citizenship is presented in cooperation with the Political Science Department’s Election Series and co-sponsored by the Lectures and Forums Committee, with assistance from the Departments of Art, Media & Communication and Theatre & Dance, and the Muhlenberg Activities Council and the Multicultural Center.
