William Blake Exhibit At 'Berg's Martin Art Gallery

Muhlenberg College’s Martin Art Gallery will host an opening for the exhibit entitled “Wings of Fire: The Illuminated Books of William Blake” on Wednesday, March 19 at 4:30 p.m.

 Monday, March 17, 2008 01:59 PM

The exhibit will remain open until April 19.

This exhibit features five original works by Blake, including two owned by the College. Other pieces will be featured from a private collection.

In addition to works of art, the gallery opening will feature leading Blake scholar, Joseph Viscomi, who will lecture at 7 p.m. in the Recital Hall, Center for the Arts. His talk will focus on Blake’s copper plate engraving technique and the online Blake archive (www.blakearchive.org).

Alumnus Chris Shepard ’07 will choreograph a dance adaptation of Blake’s poem “The Tyger” on April 10-12. Also, from April 17-19, alumni Brian Kirchner ’06 and Christi Razzi ’07 will be performing a musical adaptation of Blake’s Songs of Innocence and of Experience. These performances will be held in the gallery.

The exhibit’s curators were an interdisciplinary team that included Dr. Grant Scott, professor of English, the students from his senior seminar course on William Blake, Gallery curator Kathy Burke, and members of the College’s departments of art and theatre & dance.

For the students, this exhibition is the culmination of a semester’s work.  In addition to studying Blake’s work as a painter, engraver, printmaker and Romantic poet, they also designed and mounted the Blake exhibit. They also published the catalog and oversaw promotions to publicize the opening.

These events are free and open to the public. For more information and performance times please visit http://www.muhlenberg.edu/cultural/gallery/exhibit.html
