'Berg Math Profs to Present at Labryinth Books in Princeton, N.J.

Muhlenberg College mathematics professors Michael Huber and William Dunham will take part in the inaugural event for “Science and Math Night,” a collaboration between Princeton University Press and Labyrinth Books in Princeton, N.J.

 Tuesday, October 27, 2009 11:22 AM

The event will take place on October 28 at 6 p.m., at Labyrinth Books, 122 Nassau Street, Princeton, N.J.
Dunham and Huber will discuss their books The Calculus Gallery: Masterpieces from Newton to Lebesgue and Mythematics: Solving the Twelve Labors of Hercules. In The Calculus Gallery, Dunham dives into the world of mathematical genius, presenting the great calculus problems and proofs since the development of calculus. While Hercules relied on superhuman strength to accomplish the Twelve Labors, Huber's Mythematics shows how math could have helped during his quest. How does Hercules defeat the Lernean Hydra and stop its heads from multiplying? Can Hercules clean the Augean Stables in a day? What is the probability that the Cretan Bull will attack the citizens of Marathon? How does Hercules deal with the terrifying Kraken? Huber's inventive math problems are accompanied by short descriptions of the Twelve Labors, taken from the writings of Apollodorus, who chronicled the life of Hercules two thousand years ago.
Also present will be Villanova University's Paul Paslesm, who will discuss his recent book Benjamin Franklin's Number.

“Science and Math Night” is a new partnership that will bring scientists, mathematicians and their work to the Princeton public.
