Hail to the Chief: Presidential Portraits of the Past from the Tonner Collection of Muhlenberg College, January 19 - April 24, 2009

The Martin Art Gallery at Muhlenberg College has collaborated with the Liberty Bell Shrine Museum to present Hail to the Chief: Presidential Portraits of the Past from the Tonner Collection of Muhlenberg College.

 Thursday, January 22, 2009 11:22 AM

The exhibition runs through April 24, 2009 and highlights 27 portraits from the College’s Florence Foerderer Tonner Collection. The etchings, engravings and lithographs were made between 1800 and 1922 and are a small segment of the art collection received by  Muhlenberg College in 1986 from the estate of Florence Foerderer Tonner (1883 - 1972) and the Lutheran Church in America. According to Kathryn Burke, Director of the Martin Art Gallery, “They offer a tempting glimpse into Mrs. Tonner's diverse and extensive collection. They have been rarely, or never, exhibited publicly."

Museum Curator Joshua Fink expanded the exhibition to include digital images of, and didactic information about, all 44 American presidents.  Throughout the run of Presidential Portraits, the Museum will feature special events for visitors of all ages, including children's activities, talks by historians and Presidential Trivia. A special public event will be held President's Day, February 16th, noon-4 p.m.

The Liberty Bell Shrine Museum is located at historic Zion’s Reformed Church, 622 Hamilton Street, Allentown.  Electronic images are available by contacting the Museum.
