Muhlenberg College Sponsors a Fun-Filled, Smoke-Free Night at the Tavern on Liberty; 18 to Enter, 21 to Drink

Students in Dr. Kahlenberg’s Health Communication class will be holding a smokeout at the Tavern on Liberty on Monday, November 30, 2009 from 6-8 pm as part of the Great American Smokeout.

 Thursday, November 19, 2009 02:21 PM

Students, faculty, staff, friends and all others are invited to join in the event that will include food and drink specials in addition to raffles with donated prizes from area businesses. The Tavern will be offering $1 pizza slices and tacos 2 for $5 food specials. The event is open to anyone 18 or over, but attendees must be 21 to drink (wristband required at entrance).

The Tavern at Liberty, formerly Liberty Street Tavern, has generously partnered with the College to host this event and help promote awareness about social smoking. The goal of the campaign is to target social smokers, and provide knowledge about the short and long term effects of smoking as well as second hand smoke. The fun, popular environment will encourage healthy social behaviors.

On Monday, November 30, students will begin the event around campus with flyers and at a table in Seegers Union from 11 am to 3 pm. By collecting cigarette butts, students hope to showcase the prevalence of smoking on the Muhlenberg campus. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase ($.50 for one, $1 for 3) throughout the day in Seegers as well as at the event at night for prizes. Smoking paraphernalia (lighters, cigarettes, matches, etc.) can be donated at the Seegers Union lobby table in exchange for a free raffle ticket, and all 2 for $5 taco purchases at the Tavern will also come with a free raffle ticket.

Special thanks to the Tavern on Liberty for hosting the event and providing food and drink specials, as well as to the businesses who donated the raffle prizes. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society. The Tavern on Liberty is located at the corner of 23rd Street and Liberty Street, Allentown, PA.
