ANOMOLIES, an all-female hip hop collective based out of New York City, will hold a day-long event including workshops, lectures, and a performance on Saturday, March 28, 2009 in Seegers Union, Muhlenberg College.

 Monday, March 23, 2009 11:22 AM

The event is free and open to the campus community and to local high school and college-aged students.

ANOMOLIES is composed of a core of 5 active members, all solo artists in their own right, who connect through collaborations, shared resources, and mutual support.  They have performed extensively throughout New York, Philadelphia, California, and as far as Paris, France. Opening for acts such as Talib Kweli, MC Lyte, Bahamadia, Medusa, Pharoah Monch, and Le Tigre, ANOMOLIEShas earned the respect of its peers, and is currently working on their highly anticipated solo and collaborative projects.

Schedule of events

4-5 p.m., Great Room, Seegers Union – Workshops
Workshops on emceeing, learning to write and freestyle; beat production, learning how to use the production software Reason to make beats; and break dancing.  RSVP strongly suggested; please contact Ryan T. Acquaotta at [email protected].

5:30 p.m., Great Room, Seegers Union – Forum, film screening and panel discussion
ANOMOLIES will discuss their history and philosophy in the forum, No More Lies = The answer to addressing the misrepresentation of women in hip-hop “The ultimate critique is the solution.” A screening of the short documentary, “The Revival,” will follow. Shot while group member Invincible was on tour with hip hop legends and veterans, Bahamadia and Roxanne Shante in Europe, the film will add a multi-generational perspective. The forum will conclude with a round table discussion focused on concrete ways for people to support women in independent hip hop as a sustainable and thriving alternative to the two dimensional images that women are limited to in the majority of mainstream media representations of hip hop.

10 p.m., Red Door Café, Seegers Union – Concert
The hip hop performance will include break dancing and live mixing by the DJ, as well as emceeing.

The event is organized by the Muhlenberg Hip Hop Collective, an unofficial organization on campus, created in 2007. As hip hop has always been a subversive art, encouraging positive and creative solutions to political problems, the Collective has aimed to create a counter culture on campus that aligns itself with subversive politics, community engagement, and good music.

The event is co-sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Life, the Office of Student Activities, the Department of Theatre and Dance, Women’s Studies, and the Center for Ethics.
