Applying to the 4+1 MAT Program

In order for students to be admitted to the MAT Program in their fifth year, students must be pre-admitted to the MAT program, typically during their junior or senior year. The following requirements must be met:

  • A minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 3.00
  • Demonstrated proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics per Pennsylvania Department of Education regulations
  • A satisfactory fieldwork portfolio
  • An Education Department faculty recommendation

In addition, all prerequisite courses must be completed before students are pre-admitted to the MAT program:

Pre K-44-8 and 7-12
  • EDU 101 History and Politics of American Educations (SL)
  • EDU 104 Education Psychology
  • EDU 191 Arts in Education (AR)
  • EDU 201 Introduction to Special Education
  • EDU 202 Introduction to Early Childhood Education
  • EDU 204 Integrated Curriculum and Instruction for Young Learners
  • EDU 212 Inclusive Education for Emergent Bilingual Students (IL, DE)
  • 2 Math Courses
  • 1 Course in American or British Literature
  • EDU 101 History and Politics of American Educations (SL) 
  • EDU 106 Educational Psychology
  • EDU 201 Introduction to Special Education
  • EDU 206 Integrated Curriculum and Instruction for Adolescent Learners
  • EDU 212 Inclusive Education for Emergent Bilingual Students (IL, DE)
  • 2 Math Courses
  • 1 Course in American or British Literature

The application to the MAT Program will take place prior to the fifth year. The following requirements must be met:

  • Completion of a major
  • A minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 3.00
  • A satisfactory fieldwork portfolio

 Graduate students in their fifth year must maintain satisfactory academic progress and a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 to remain in good standing.
