About the Collective
The LGBTQ Faculty and Staff Collective at Muhlenberg College formed in 2017 following a meeting of faculty and staff regarding the creation of professional organizations at the college formed on the basis of identity. The Collective’s purpose is improving the working and learning environment for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer members of Muhlenberg College and the surrounding community by providing opportunities for socializing and advocacy.
The Collective’s membership is open to all Muhlenberg College faculty, staff, graduate interns and individuals who support the objectives of the Collective.
By bringing concerns about retention, classroom climate, life experiences and other issues to the attention of college administration, providing educational and social programs events to the queer community and partnering with other campus groups and organizations, the Collective aims to increase queer visibility and build community at the College and to improve productivity and quality of life at Muhlenberg College for all employees and students.
The Collective works closely with various offices across campus to increase awareness of diversity at Muhlenberg College, provide feedback on the climate for queer professionals at the college, and improve the recruitment and retention of LGBTQ-identifying faculty and staff. The Collective sponsors social gatherings, such as a welcome-back barbecue potluck, an end-of-year barbecue and ongoing outings throughout the year to foster community-wide connection and support for members of the different groups that make up the LGBTQ community in Allentown and the surrounding activities areas.
The Collective sponsors an electronic mailing list for members for business, information and social events.
