The Spanish curriculum is diverse and interdisciplinary, and at least 90 percent of classroom instruction takes place in Spanish. You’ll be challenged and supported as you grow your communication skills and explore Hispanic cultures.

Experiential learning opportunities abound. The program aligns with multiple study abroad programs in Spain and across Latin America and also offers several short-term study abroad courses led by faculty, such as a Muhlenberg Integrative Learning Abroad (MILA) course that combined Spanish studies with public health in Panama.

Faculty celebrate Allentown’s large and diverse Hispanic population through community-engaged learning. Advanced students serve as interpreters within the community, while the popular Conversation Partners Program links students with native or heritage Spanish speakers or high-level Spanish students to enhance intercultural communication.

On campus, students enjoy vibrant events like the Latin American Film Festival and El Día de los Muertos. The Language and Culture Commons provides high-tech materials and professional guidance to support language studies. Each spring, senior members of Phi Sigma Iota, a Romance Language honor society, present independent projects relating to French, Italian and Spanish language, literature and/or culture.

El Día de los Muertos

Every year, students and members of the Muhlenberg community create a colorful and moving ofrenda in Egner Memorial Chapel for Día de los Muertos, a traditional Mexican celebration of life.
